Forty miles south of our stomping grounds of Chillicothe, Portsmouth is the County Seat of Scioto County, just across from the Ohio River adjacent to Kentucky, and includes some wonderful little communities such as Sciotoville, North Moreland, Boneyfiddle, Hilltop, and North End Ohio. It has a population of just under 20,000, and was founded in 1803.
By the late 19th century, Portsmouth had emerged as a thriving industrial hub along the Ohio River, rivaling Pittsburgh and Cincinnati. Its economy was primarily driven by iron and steel production, with new enterprises like the Portsmouth Steel Company contributing significantly to its growth.
One fun little fact about Portsmouth… The Detroit Lions franchise originated in 1930 as the Portsmouth Spartans, based in Ohio. The birth of professional football in Portsmouth, Ohio, was intertwined with the legacies of two remarkable individuals: Jim Thorpe, a legendary athlete, and Jack Creasy, a local civic leader often overlooked.
Thorpe’s tenure as player-coach of the Shoe-Steels, a precursor to the Spartans, was instrumental in cultivating community support for Portsmouth’s entry into the NFL.
Creasy, a Portsmouth native and former high school athletic star, played a pivotal role by managing the Shoe-Steels and persuading Thorpe to come out of retirement. Their combined efforts laid the groundwork for the establishment of the Portsmouth Spartans and, ultimately, the Detroit Lions.
In 1934, Detroit radio executive George A. Richards acquired the team and relocated it to Detroit, where it was officially renamed the Lions.
Locals know there’s lots to do around the area, including the Southern Ohio Museum, Shawnee State Park, and Portsmouth Raceway.
