Motorcycle Accidents – Warm Weather

Unfortunately, that can lead to motorcycle accidents. Riding a motorcycle is a lot of fun but it comes with increased risks that other drives don’t face.

When Spring arrives, here in Ohio, it has usually been a long time since vehicle drivers have had to share the road with motorcycles, and they aren’t always looking for them. Motorcycle riders might also be a bit out of practice when it comes to dealing with vehicle drivers. Both of those situations can lead to crashes.

Here are some simple tips to help both motorcycle riders and vehicle drivers avoid accidents this Spring…

For Vehicle Drivers, Look for Motorcycles – If you are pulling out of a side street, backing out of a driveway or parking space, or merging into a different lane while driving, be sure to look for motorcycles. A motorcycle is much more difficult to see than a car, truck or van. They take up less space, can stay in your blind spots longer and can be hidden trees, posts, bushes and other objects along highways and city streets. Take an extra look to make sure a motorcycle rider isn’t there.

For Motorcycle Riders – Make sure you leave some space between your bike and other vehicles on the roadway. Try to ride in a highly visible location to help other drives see you. Be aware that they might not be looking for you. A motorcycle rider has to be even more defensive when driving than other drivers.

Injuries from a motorcycle accident involving cars or trucks can be very serious and even result in death. Both motorcycle riders and those driving other vehicles can help prevent motorcycle accidents by following the tips above.
